Vector Surveillance Lab

The Vector Surveillance Lab for the San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Conrol District will be used by District Entomologists and Staff to conduct daily laboratory testing on mosquitos and other disease carrying animals. When finished, the new lab will replace an existing 1,600 SF laboratory building that has served the district for over 20 years. 

The new building contains multiple laboratory spaces, including a BSL-3 (Biosafety Level - 3) Molecular Room and a PCR Lab; Insectaries (ACL-2 and ACL-1) and Colony Rooms; an office and library; a Trap Shop where mosquito traps are built, charged, and repaired; a Chemical Room where pesticides are tested on mosquitos; and ancillary support spaces. 

The Vectory Surveillance Lab is designed to be comfortable for the laboratory staff and insect species alike. 

For lab safety and to maintain a stable environmet for the mosquito colonies, a backup generator is provided. 

World BioHazTech, an export in Laboratory Design and Contruction was retained by ARCHITECHNICA to provide additional QA/QC review of the drawings and construction. In addition, they handled the Laboratory Commissioning of the BSL-3 portions of the facility.

We began this project with a feasibility study/master plan to determine whether it was better to add on to the existing lab, bring in a portable BSL-3 lab, or build a new facility. After careful study, it was determined that building a new lab would be less impactful on their current operations.
